Take your sorries and stick them in a sack....

Springsteen calls Wal-Mart deal a mistake Jan 31 12:50 AM US/Eastern NEW YORK (AP) - The Boss is owning up to a mistake. In an interview with The New York Times, Bruce Springsteen says he shouldn't have made a deal with Wal-Mart. This month, the store started exclusively selling a Springsteen greatest-hits CD. Some fans were critical because Springsteen has been a longtime supporter of worker's rights, and Wal-Mart has faced criticism for its labor practices. Springsteen's team didn't vet the issue as closely as it should have, and that he "dropped the ball on it," he told the Times for a story to be published in Sunday editions and previewed on its Web site.

Another tax cheat chosen by Obama

You cannot make this stuff up. Tom Daschle, nominee to head up HHS, failed to pay $128,000 in taxes . But fear not, he said he didn't know he had to pay it so its all good; Daschle's spokeswoman, revealing only the back payments for the car service, said he "naively" believed it was "nothing more than a generous offer from a friend." The spokeswoman, Jenny Backus, said that last June Daschle asked his accountant whether the car could be construed as a reportable gift or payment. The accountant intended to correct the error with Daschle's 2008 tax filing, she said. So you see it was just a common mistake made all the time. I wonder if that excuse would work for me?

Wolf Blitzer doesn't see black people...

Michael Steele is elected the first African American RNC Chairman and Wolf Blitzer of CNN gives us this.. “Take a look at the audience, though -- and I want to show our viewers a picture of the audience. Michael Steele, the first African-American leader of the RNC -- Leslie, I don’t see a whole lot of black people, at least in that group over there.” He went on to say, “It’s encouraging. I’m sure you’re encouraged that all these white people basically elected an African-American to be their leader Who says the left isn't obsessed with race? Also Jan Larimer elected co-chair and Sharon Day elected Secretary of the RNC. Both of the female persuasion. By the way, which Clinton retread has Obama picked lately?

It's hard to believe that this woman is the Speaker of the House

If you ascend to the top spot of the House of Representatives aren't you suppose to sound like you deserve it? You be the judge;

Rangeling around with IRS...

Having some fun... The legislation calls for the creation of what [Rep. John Carter, R-Texas] calls the, “Rangel Rule,” — drawing attention to the recent legal issues of House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., enabling citizens who fail to pay taxes on time to do so later with no additional fees. Rangel, who writes the country’s tax policies, acknowledged last fall that he failed to pay thousands in real estate taxes for rental income he earned from a property in the Dominican Republic. As of September 2008 the Harlem Democrat reportedly paid back more than $10,000 in taxes but that did not include any IRS penalties. “As Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, I believe you set an example for all American taxpayers in your dealings with the IRS, and that you must do so in a way that enforces blind justice without regard to wealth or status,” he wrote in the January 6th missive.

Ha! That Bush, what a dunderhead...oh wait.

The Gore Effect

A ‘Winter Storm Watch’ has been posted for the nation’s capitol and there is a potential for significant snow… sleet… or ice accumulations. “I can’t imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside,” a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

WH Press Sec. Robert Gibbs knows his Brazilian soccer

We've been told what a genius this guy is... and he proves it today ; "Why did the administration believe it was important for the American people not to know the name of the two senior administration officials who briefed us this morning on Guantanamo?" one reporter asked in the packed and steaming hot briefing room just off the White House West Wing. "I hope that you all found the exercise that we did this morning helpful," Mr. Gibbs offered helpfully. "Do you know," the reporter followed, "that you've used ... one of those senior officials' first names several times in this briefing?" A very long pause ensued. "I do," the spokesman said, his cornflower-colored tie suddenly looking a bit too tight. "Are we allowed to repeat that name?" Mr. Gibbs answered by citing as precedent of Brazilian soccer stars being known only by a single name—sure to one day be a classic White House non-answer.

Obama pays a visit to his flock...

Just like they used to treat Bush, right?

Well he did go through Saudi rehab!

Expect more of this once the choir boys down in Gitmo are released ; The emergence of a former Guantánamo Bay detainee as the deputy leader of Al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch has underscored the potential complications in carrying out the executive order President Obama signed Thursday that the detention center be shut down within a year. The militant, Said Ali al-Shihri, is suspected of involvement in a deadly bombing of the United States Embassy in Yemen’s capital, Sana, in September. He was released to Saudi Arabia in 2007 and passed through a Saudi rehabilitation program for former jihadists before resurfacing with Al Qaeda in Yemen.

Updated: Will Obama break 1981 Reagan record for inauguration Nielsen ratings? No. Posted on 20 January 2009 by Robert Seidman Final Update : The Obama inauguration was watched by 37.8 million, second only to Reagan’s 41.8 million in 1981. Another update : still haven’t seen the viewer numbers but James Hibberd reminded me that a household ratings point is larger today than it was in 1981, so Reagan’s record might not be safe after all. We’ll see! Update: Reagan looks safe, but Obama appears headed for second most-watched inauguration . Ronald Reagan’s inauguration twenty-eight years ago on January 20, 1981 set the inaugural ratings record, averaging almost forty-two million (41,800,260). Will Barack Obama break the record? I was in the nearby Safeway about five minutes after the inauguration ended and it was a barren ghost town. But that’s a bit anecdotal for my tastes. We won’t likely know the results until tomorrow, but in the meanwhile here’s some real da...

Pray tell what could that mean ? “She has a tax problem that came up in the vetting and a potential nanny issue,” the soruce said. “And reporters are starting to look at her marriage more closely,” the soruce continued, refusing to provide any specifics. Gossip columns have reported for more than a year that Kennedy’s marriage to Ed Schlossberg is essentially over, and the gossip site Gawker.com has reported rumors that she’s been linked to New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger. Kennedy denied any issue over her marriage in an interview with The Post last month… Several sources said the governor, who has sole power to replace Clinton, was unimpressed with how the daughter of John F. Kennedy handled media interviews and private sessions with various officials. Three sources said Paterson had conveyed to Kennedy on Tuesday that she wasn’t likely to get picked. She, too, was at Obama’s inauguration, but kept a very low profile. More of the same from...

Obama bans harsh interrogations

Except for the really bad guys... But the orders would leave unresolved complex questions surrounding the closing of the Guantánamo prison, including whether, where and how many of the detainees are to be prosecuted. They could also allow Mr. Obama to reinstate the C.I.A.’s detention and interrogation operations in the future , by presidential order, as some have argued would be appropriate if Osama bin Laden or another top-level leader of Al Qaeda were captured. The new White House counsel, Gregory B. Craig, briefed lawmakers about some elements of the orders on Wednesday evening. A Congressional official who attended the session said Mr. Craig acknowledged concerns from intelligence officials that new restrictions on C.I.A. methods might be unwise and indicated that the White House might be open to allowing the use of methods other the 19 techniques allowed for the military.

TurboTax?

The guy who everyone says is the one and only person to lead us out of the current economic and financial crisis uses TurboTax to do his taxes ?  What? And he says that TurboTax did not ask him if he was self-employed and if he needed to pay self-employment income taxes. You have got to be kidding me. I use TaxCut, its primary competitor and I can tell you that it ALWAYS asks if you are self-employed or if you have any 1099 forms you need to enter.  And many readers of The Campaign Spot on NRO are in disagreement with Geithner's answer.

It was funny...but he should retake it to avoid legal problems

Experts say Obama should retake the oath Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau Wednesday, January 21, 2009 (01-21) 04:00 PST Washington - -- Several constitutional lawyers said President Obama should, just to be safe, retake the oath of office that was flubbed by Chief Justice John Roberts. The 35-word oath is explicitly prescribed in the Constitution, Article II, Section 1, which begins by saying the president "shall" take the oath "before he enter on the execution of his office." The oath reads: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." In giving the oath, Roberts misplaced the word "faithfully," at which point Obama paused quizzically. Roberts then corrected himself, but Obama repeated the words as Roberts initially said them. A do-over "would take him 30 seconds, he can do...

The new White House website has this gem on it; Under the “agenda” portion of the site regarding Katrina, it reads: “President Obama will keep the broken promises made by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He and Vice President Biden will take steps to ensure that the federal government will never again allow such catastrophic failures in emergency planning and response to occur.” “President Obama swiftly responded to Hurricane Katrina,” the statement on the site continues. “Citing the Bush Administration’s ‘unconscionable ineptitude’ in responding to Hurricane Katrina, then-Senator Obama introduced legislation requiring disaster planners to take into account the specific needs of low-income hurricane victims.” Couldn't wait could they...

Bruce Springsteen, working on a brain....

I really like Springsteen's new song "Workin On A Dream" but after reading this inanity I don't know if I can bring myself to buy this mental midges new album; Bruce Springsteen: "We've lived through a nightmare like that in the past eight years here. We had a historically blind administration who didn't take consideration of the past; thousands and thousands of people died, lives were ruined and terrible, terrible things occurred because, there was no sense of history, no sense that the past is living and real. "So the song is about this happening to this character. He moves ahead. He tries to make the right moves. He awakes from a vision of his death, and realises: life is finite. Time is with me always. And I'm frightened. And he rides west where he settles down. But the past comes back in the form of this bounty hunter, whose mind is also quickened and burdened by the need to get his man. And these possessed creatures meet along the ...

Sanity....and from a liberal

From James Poniewozik at Time; On one of its incessantly running Inauguration Day promos, a narrator gushes, “When a new President inspires the nation, one day Americans will ask: where were you when Barack Obama became President?” Besides the confusing timeline of that sentence, there’s something almost bludgeoningly hortatory about it. Mind you, I voted for Barack Obama enthusiastically, in the primaries and the general election–and yet hearing stuff like this (Obama = The Moon Landing) I can empathize with the people who didn’t. Refresh my memory if I’m forgetting something, but when President Bush was inaugurated in 2001, I don’t remember promos this blatantly triumphalist even on Fox News. It passive-aggressively defies you to disagree with it, as it asserts that this guy who hasn’t even been sworn in yet will undeniably be an inspirational, nay, an historic figure. Even if you didn’t vote for him, you have to admit that Jan. 20 will be a truly amazing day. Right? You hav...

The continuing slow death of the global warming hoax...

Powerline highlights the trashing of global warming alarmists by a William Harper, Cyruss Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics at Princeton "Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. Every time you exhale, you exhale air that has 4 percent carbon dioxide. To say that that's a pollutant just boggles my mind. What used to be science has turned into a cult. ... All the evidence I see is that the current warming of the climate is just like past warmings. In fact, it's not as much as past warmings yet, and it probably has little to do with carbon dioxide, just like past warmings had little to do with carbon dioxide." ... Happer said he is dismayed by the politicization of the issue and believes the community of climate change scientists has become a veritable "religious cult," noting that nobody understands or questions any of the science. He noted in an interview that in the past decade, despite what he called "alarmist" claims, there has not only not be...

Very Clintonian; For Obama, who repeatedly insisted during the 2008 presidential campaign and the transition period that “America doesn’t torture,” a classified loophole would allow him to back up his vow to end harsh interrogations while retaining a full range of presidential options in conducting the war against terrorism. The proposed loophole, which could come in the form of a classified annex to the manual, w ould satisfy intelligence experts who fear that an outright ban of so-called enhanced interrogation techniques would limit the government in obtaining threat information that could save American lives. It would also preserve Obama’s flexibility to authorize any interrogation tactics he might deem necessary for national security. However, such a move would frustrate Senate Democrats and human rights, retired military and religious groups that have pressed for a government-wide prohibition on methods they describe as torture… “That would not be good,” said the ...

More broken promises for the reality based community. Remember the threat to bankrupt any coal new coal plants? Not so much... Big Coal is on a roll in the nation’s capital, winning early rounds this week in what promises to be a long fight over fossil fuels and climate change. Despite a well-funded ad campaign by environmentalists attacking the industry, and a huge coal-ash spill in Tennessee that has led to calls for more regulation, the industry has received positive assurances this week from President-elect Barack Obama’s nominees that the new administration is committed to keeping coal a big part of the nation’s energy source. On Wednesday, Mr. Obama’s choice to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Lisa Jackson, described coal to a Senate panel as “a vital resource” for the country. A day earlier, Mr. Obama’s nominee to run the Energy Department, physicist Steven Chu, referred to coal as a “great natural resource.” Two years ago, he called the expansion of c...

FISA court upholds Bush warrantless wiretapping

Oh boy...the left is sure to go nuts over this. The NY Times can barely believe it; "In validating the government’s wide authority to collect foreign intelligence, it may offer legal credence to the Bush administration’s repeated assertions that the president has constitutional authority to act without specific court approval in ordering national security eavesdropping." So now what happens to the whistler-blower? He exposed a valuable tool in the fight against terror and crippled the program. Now the court has concluded it is legal. Should the traitor whistler-blower be indicted?

Massa had to be in the nation’s capital Tuesday for his swearing in as the 29th Congressional District’s new representative. He drove the General Motors Equinox prototype car to draw attention to the technology, some of which is being developed in the district. Dozens of people gathered in Tehran waving Palestinian flags and defacing and setting fire to images of the President-elect. Iranian demonstrators have often burned effigies or pictures of US presidents in the past but this appeared to be the first time Mr Obama’s picture had been defaced, a week before his inauguration as president. The Iranian government has condemned the West, and the United States in particular, for not doing more to stop Israel’s attacks on Gaza. The 17-day-old offensive, which Israel says is to stop rockets being fired at it, has killed more than 900 Palestinians.

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon indicted on perjury, theft charges -- baltimoresun.com Baltimore Mayor Sheila A. Dixon was charged today with 12 counts of felony theft, perjury, fraud and misconduct in office, becoming the city's first sitting mayor to be criminally indicted. The case stems in part from at least $15,348 in gifts Dixon allegedly received from her former boyfriend, prominent city developer Ronald H. Lipscomb, while she was City Council president. She also is accused of using as much as $3,400 in gift cards, some donated to her office for distribution to "needy families," to purchase Best Buy electronics and other items for herself and her staff. Lipscomb was not indicted in the Dixon case, but he and City Councilwoman Helen L. Holton were charged this week in a separate $12,500 bribery scheme. Report: Al-Qaida No. 2 blames Obama for Gaza fight - Yahoo! News CAIRO, Egypt – Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader lashed out at President-elect Barack Obama in a new audio message Tuesday, accusing him of not doing anything to stop Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip , according to an intelligence monitoring center. The recording purportedly by Ayman al-Zawahiri was al-Qaida's first comments on the Gaza crisis since Israel launched its offensive against the Islamic militants of Hamas on Dec. 27.

Will anyone in the media ask Obama about this?

From the Guardian; The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp. There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on in his administration, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive. Richard Haass, a diplomat under both presidents Bush who was named by a number of news organisations this week as Obama’s choice for Middle East envoy, supports low level contacts with Hamas provided there is a ceasefire in place and a Hamas-Fatah reconciliation emerges… Bruce Hoffman, a counterterrorism expert at the Georgetown school of foreign service, said it was unlikely Obama would move to initiate contacts with Hamas unless the radical faction in Damascus was crippled by the conflict in Gaza. “This would really be dependent on Hamas’s military wing having suf...

You know it must be a hoax if HuffPo wants an apology...

Harold Ambler: Mr. Gore: Apology Accepted You are probably wondering whether President-elect Obama owes the world an apology for his actions regarding global warming. The answer is, not yet. There is one person, however, who does. You have probably guessed his name: Al Gore. Mr. Gore has stated, regarding climate change, that "the science is in." Well, he is absolutely right about that, except for one tiny thing. It is the biggest whopper ever sold to the public in the history of humankind.
